What we are talking about?
According to conventional standards, history of hostel movement (do not confuse with the English word «Hustle» — a slang name for a noisy party) began about a hundred years ago. In the beginning of the last century modest German teacher Richard Shirmann unexpectedly initiated a great idea which became widespread all over the world.
In general the word «Hostel» comes from English and means a small hotel. Wikipedia gives us the following definition: «Hostel provides budget oriented, sociable accommodation where quests can rent a bed in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes kitchen».
So the prototype of modern hostels are European public houses and Russian doss-houses where every guest could find dinner, bed (from separate room to place in hayloft), new friends and useful advice – and all this stuff at a very cheap price.
But let’s come back to Richard Shirmann. In 1909 he was ordinary school teacher who loved to travel with his students, but he always had a problem with places to spend a night in other cities.
The company of young tourists spent nights in schools which were usually empty on weekends and vacations. So Shirmann was struck by a great idea to organize permanent accommodations for students on the base of empty schools. When this idea was realized Shirmann used to remove tables and chairs from the classrooms in the evenings. Bags with straw were instead beds. Every morning all roomers helped to put furniture back into the classroom and to sweep the straw outside. Later one of the first hostels moved to the castle Alteny, where it still exists.
Eventually such hospitality changed. Today in many countries apartments and guest-houses work as hostels on vacations and anyone can stay there for a short period of time. In the middle of the last century subculture of hippie sent the idea of low-budget mobile tourism in right direction. The so called backpacking of the youth of that time changed the culture of urban travelers, forcing them to choose the budget and comfortable accommodation in hostels instead of expensive rent in an average hotel.
The passion for changing places with readiness for minimal service led the growth of hostels’s popularity all around Europe. Contemporary hostels (which number is about 5000 in more than 60 countries) offer a wide range of services for its guests. These services range from classic accommodation (bed and minimal service) and free wi-fi zone to B&B system (bed and breakfast) and a bar inside. A lot of European hostels at the same time function as club and exhibit space, sometimes they are used for certain events such as championship board games, exhibitions and closed parties. One thing remains unchanged – it is inexpensive and comfortable accommodation at an available price!
Zokol is the first hostel in Novosibirsk which corresponds to the needs of the most sophisticated guest. Hostel has convinient location (in a quite city center) which allows guests to be near all city sights and cultural center and is close to transport knots (5 minutes walk to the subway station «Ploschad Lenina»). Cozy and spacious rooms of hostel in the ground floor of the house exclude any problems with all-day free access for its guests.
We are glad to see you! Welcome!
